Ohio legalized cannabis for recreational purposes in November 2023 by voter initiative. Ohio is the 24th state to legalize recreational use marijuana. So what’s next for the Ohio recreational cannabis industry? To understand what happens now, we must understand the law that was passed.
Ohio Recreational Cannabis Regulation:
This legalizes and regulates the cultivation, manufacturing, testing and the sale of marijuana to Ohio residents 21 and up. It also legalizes home grow for Ohioans 21 and up with a limit of six plants per person and 12 plants per residence, and imposes a 10% tax at the point of sale for each transaction. Lastly, the commission will establish a social equity program for program applicants.
We have seen this happen time and time again throughout the United States and Canada. Typically, the commission will work diligently to create and publish the program regulatory framework. They will define the license types available in the state. They will also open the licensing period to allow for additional businesses to open in the Ohio recreational cannabis market.
