Rhode Island adult use marijuana became legal in 2022. The first sale of recreational marijuana in Rhode Island took place on December 1, 2022.
Who Oversees the Rhode Island Adult Use Marijuana Program?
The Rhode Island Department of Health Medical Marijuana Program implements the provisions of the Medical Marijuana Act and regulations for registered patients, caregivers and authorized purchasers. The Medical Marijuana Program accepts, reviews, and approves patient, caregiver and authorized purchaser applications and renewals. The Department of Business Regulation is responsible for licensing and regulatory oversight of compassion centers, cultivators, and cooperative cultivations and oversight of medical marijuana plant tagging requirements. It is likely that upon legalization, these two departments will also oversee the recreational marijuana program in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island Recreational Sale Restrictions
The regulation of marijuana sales has defined purchase limitations for consumers. People 21 years and older may purchase up to 1 ounce of cannabis for personal use. These limitations are outlined in the Rhode Island Dispensary Standard Operating Procedures.
